Euripidaristophanize was a challenging and rewarding play to work on. As a new Canadian play being developed for the stage, we were very close with the playwright, director and designers to create one cohesive vision.
Euripidaristophanize had over 30 masks being created from scratch, so many were worked on by more than one individual to reach the deadline. I had the pleasure of completing two masks from start to finish: Helen of Troy (Worn by Ben Burchell) and Posideon (Worn by Eric Eyers).
The initial process involved sculpting from Marie-Kucheran's original designs, and refining to bring the piece to life. Over 30 hours of sculpting was done to fit the designers intention.
Once the sculpt was complete, the next step was vacuforming. After forming, we would meticulously cut out the eyes and nostrils so the actors could see and breathe. Then a layer of mesh was added to give the form strength.
Base coated with a rust-coloured primer to make the gold pop- then layered with Gold and washed with to give them a more used look.
